Just about all projects have virtual teams. But what exactly is a virtual team and can they be better defined? Harold Kerzner defines virtual teams with seven distinct types. There are Network teams, these lack clear boundaries and membership is fluid. There are Parallel teams where the teams have distinct boundaries and membership. Usually they work short term efforts. There are Project or product development teams which have fluid membership, clear boundaries and a defined customer base. These teams have decision making authority. There are also Work or production teams that have distinct membership and clear boundaries. Team members perform regular and outgoing work. Service Management is the sixth type which also has distinct membership and works on a regular basis to lead corporate activities. The last team type is the Action team which deals with immediate actions usually an emergency situation. Membership may be fluid or distinct. Do you use virtual teams in your projects, if so, what types?
